Who is eligible for Manhattan-Elwood Public Library District library cards?
All residents over 5 years old living within the Manhattan-Elwood Public Library District are entitled to free library cards.
When can my child get a card?
Children that are going into kindergarten can get a library card starting July 1st the summer before school begins.
How do I get a library card?
Getting a library card is easy! Just stop by the Front Circulation Desk and present identification showing a photo ID and your current address..
If you are under 14 years of age, you will need a parent or legal guardian to sign for your card.
What kind of identification do I need to get a library card?
If you have a valid Illinois driver's license or state I.D. with your current address, that is the only form of identification needed. If you do not have a driver's license or state I.D. with your current address, you'll need to bring in one of the following items
(along with a photo I.D.):
- utility bill
- closing papers or rental agreement
- bank statement
- credit card statement
- a piece of mail
These must be dated and must show your name and current address.
How long is my card valid?
All library cards are valid for three years.
My card has expired. How do I renew it?
To renew your library card, you must bring in your expired card and photo I.D. with current address. Your card will be renewed for three years.
What if I lose or damage my card?
There is a $2.00 fee for replacing lost or damaged cards. Proof of residency is required at the time of issuance. You should report a lost, missing or stolen card immediately to the circulation desk. Materials checked out on your card become your responsibility.
Can I use my card at other libraries?
Yes! Your library card can be used at other libraries in the Prairie Area Library System. You can also borrow materials at most other Illinois libraries with your valid Manhattan-Elwood Public Library card. Some libraries may limit the number and type of materials you can borrow.
